Back Pain
“Therapeutic massage may be one of the best options for treating chronic back pain.”— Dan Cherkin, PhDWhat Causes Back Pain?
According to the medical research group, Mayo Clinic, 80% of people will experience back pain in their lives. The causes of back pain could be anything from a self-imposed condition, to a mechanical problem, to an acquired condition or disease.
Back pain can be caused by a variety of circumstances. Any act of over-straining the back can cause back pain, including: lifting heavy objects or lifting improperly; awkward movements of the torso; sitting or standing for an extended period of time; bad habits of posture or movement; structural deviations; infections; or simply a bad mattress.
What Are the Symptoms of Back Pain?
The symptoms can vary from a constant aching to a sharp, dull or stiff sensation anywhere from the base of the neck to the hips. Chronic back pain is any of these symptoms that lasts for more than three months; and acute back pain will arrive suddenly and last from a few days to a few weeks.
How Can Back Pain Be Treated?
“Alternative therapies for back pain are growing in popularity,” says Dan Cherkin, PhD.“Many doctors, health plans, and people with back pain are wondering: Which treatments are really helpful and worth the cost? This study shows that therapeutic massage may be one of the best options for treating chronic back pain.” Furthermore, this study found massage to be best for reducing medication, improving mobility and range of motion, as well as reducing pain.
