Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Massage is the most highly suggested treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome because it can increase circulation, help remove local toxins, and decrease inflammation in the affected area. What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (or CTS) is a potentially incapacitating condition involving pain and weakness in the hand and wrist, and movement problems especially in the thumb area. The disorder can range from moderate to severe, leading to pain, numbness, nerve damage, and, eventually, to loss of movement and paralysis of the thumb and first two fingers or the wrist.
Its symptoms mimic that of other disorders, including muscle spasms, Reynaud's Phenomenon, Arthritis, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and even heart problems. Therefore, it is important to visit a medical professional for a correct diagnosis of CTS.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by the compression of the median nerve in the wrist. The median nerve is responsible for touch-related sensory messages to the brain and it is associated with motion.
Along with nine tendons, the median nerve travels through the narrow tunnel of carpal bones of the wrist (i.e., the 'Carpal Tunnel') to the hand and fingers. Compression of the median nerve occurs when the tendons of the wrist and hand swell. This swelling and its accompanying inflammation may be caused by fluid retention in the hands or by rheumatoid arthritis; however, it is most commonly caused by strain due to repetitive motion of the hands and wrist. In a time of computer keyboards and a high demand for fine-motor skills, repetitive motion-induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is an increasing problem.
How Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome be Prevented and Treated?
CTS generally is a preventable condition. The key to preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to prevent strain to the tendons and ligaments of the hand and wrist. Using supporting equipment such as wrist braces and taking instruction on proper movement usually can prevent CTS. In cases where Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by another ailment, anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen may prevent the condition.
Because Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by inflammation, anything that will 1) increase circulation, 2) help remove local toxins, and 3) decrease inflammation in the affected area will aid recovery. Massage is the most highly suggested treatment for CTS because it satisfies all three of these criteria. Doctors also suggest that CTS sufferers massage the affected area themselves between regular professional massage treatments. Regular massage should relieve pain within a few weeks, and all symptoms may cease within a few months.
erious cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may require surgery. However, surgery should be considered only as a last resort because it is, at best, a temporary solution for CTS. Surgery also puts the sufferer under the additional stress of having surgery in the first place as well as recuperating from it.
