FAQ
I frequently recommend massage and touch therapy because it is never harmful, and it often dramatically improves how you feel.—Dr. Andrew Weil
Below are frequently asked questions about our massage therapy services. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!
What is massage therapy?
Muscular Therapy or Massage Therapy is the systematized manipulation of soft tissues for the purpose of normalizing them. Practitioners use a variety of physical methods including applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, or causing movement to the body. How do massage therapists perform their work?
Therapists primarily use their hands, but also may use their forearms, elbows, or feet. The basic goal of massage therapy is to help the body heal itself and to increase health and well-being.What is the role of touch in massage therapy?
Touch is the core ingredient of massage therapy and also combines science and art. Practitioners learn specific techniques for massage and use their sense of touch to determine the right amount of pressure to apply to each person and locate areas of tension and other soft-tissue problems. Touch also conveys a sense of caring, an important component in the healing relationship. How does massage help the body?
When muscles are overworked, waste products and toxins can accumulate, causing soreness, stiffness, and even muscle spasms. Massage improves circulation, which increases blood flow, bringing fresh oxygen to body tissues. This can help eliminate waste products, speed healing after injury, and enhance recovery from disease. What are some other benefits of massage?
Therapeutic massage can be used to promote general well-being and enhance self-esteem, while boosting the circulatory and immune systems to benefit blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion, and skin tone. It has been incorporated into many health systems, and different massage techniques have been developed and integrated into various complementary therapies. What should I expect at my scheduled appointment?
Expect to arrive a few minutes early to fill out a brief intake form. Your Practitioner will talk to you about what therapies will be most effective for your body. You may be asked to do some movements to test your Range of Motion for certain muscle groups or joints. Please let your therapist know if you have medical issues, however minor. Massage is not appropriate for all conditions.Do you accept insurance?
First Hand Healing will, upon request, provide you with an invoice you may turn into most insurance companies for re-reimbursement.Must I disrobe during my treatment?
Some clients are concerned about disrobing for massage treatment. Not all treatments require you to undress. Should a change in clothing be necessary, you will have complete privacy to do this. During the massage, you will relax on the massage table, beneath a sheet and blanket. Your therapist will ensure your modesty and comfort at all times. How can I get the most benefit from my massage therapy session?
Simply relax and make yourself comfortable. Close your eyes and lie quietly or chat. It's your massage and we encourage you to do whatever feels relaxing to you. Massage on a healthy tissue should feel wonderful, not painful or ticklish. The most effective and deepest massage works with the body's natural responses, not against them. Working in the area of an injury or chronic pain may cause discomfort at first, but tenderness usually lessens quickly. Should you feel pain, please tell your therapist so she can make adjustments to minimize it. If you have questions at any point during the session, please do not hesitate to ask them.
