Headaches and Migraines
For many migraine sufferers, alternative health care treatments including acupuncture, massage, and shiatsu are effective and doctor recommended. What are Migraines?
Migraine headaches are one of four main types of headache that also include tension headaches, cluster headaches, and hormone headaches. Typical migraine symptoms include:
- dizziness
- nausea
- loss of vision
- intense pulsing or throbbing pain in the head
- sensitivity to light and sound
- vomiting
Migraines can be extremely debilitating and expensive, not only due to time lost from school and work but also because drugs used to treat them are costly and do not always help. Chronic migraine sufferers, especially those with regularly recurring headaches, face a lower quality of life combined with inability to accomplish daily tasks due to extreme pain.
What Causes Migraines?
Doctors do not know the exact causes of migraines, though many now believe that predisposition to migraines is a hereditary abnormality in cell control in the brain. Contributing factors can include stress, food allergies or intolerances, a sudden drop in stress levels, lack of food or sleep, exposure to light, or hormonal imbalances in women. Although these triggers do not cause the migraines, they may activate the process that leads to them.
How Can Migraines be Prevented and Treated?
Doctors are still searching for effective ways to prevent and treat migraines. Many people who undergo traditional cocktails of heavy drug therapy give up on these therapies due to their considerable expense, often poor results, and unpleasant side effects including depression, insomnia, weight gain, nausea, rashes, and occasional abdominal scarring.
For many migraine sufferers, alternative health care treatments including acupuncture, massage, and shiatsu are effective and doctor recommended. An added and significant benefit to these treatments is that they do not have the unpleasant side effects of drugs.
For ongoing prevention of chronic migraines, doctors recommend deep relaxation, including meditation, which involves quiet thought and deep, restful breathing. Other relaxation techniques include massage, craniosacral work, acupuncture, and shiatsu, which not only create relaxation, but also pinpoint and treat areas and problems that may be the triggers for the migraine sufferers (also called "migraineurs"). Massage also can help correct muscle pain and tension caused by the physical reaction of having a migraine. Trigger-point therapy can help release tight muscles in the shoulders, neck, and upper back, leading to a release of tension points triggered during a migraine.
For chronic migraine sufferers, doctors recommend massage once or twice a week for four to six weeks. Doctors also suggest acupuncture 10 times a week in 20-minute treatment sessions, or twice a week for hour-long sessions.
